Grouper :: The word “grouper” comes from the word for the fish, most widely believed to be from the Portuguese name, garoupa. Their mouth and gills form a powerful sucking system that sucks their prey in from a distance. They also use their mouth to dig into sand to form their shelters under big rocks, jetting it out through their gills. Their gill muscles are so powerful that it is nearly impossible to pull them out of their cave if they feel attacked and extend those muscles to lock themselves in. These bottom fish are a fun alternative to trolling. They offer work to pull out of their bottom dwelling holes and offer a great eating cuisine. FIshing Reports 2010
Evey so often we write about our experiences with what we're catching. This blog is organized by month, with the most recent entries for any given month on top.

Nov 17

The zhao was out at the crack of dawn today.  Armed with Chilly Willys and prepping for the upcoming Wahoo tournament on sunday--donald and copeche started the day by hooking a 150lb striped marlin--boatside in 15 minutes with a safe healthy release.  Not long after the big hook up with a 40lb wahoo then a second Hoo within seconds--The first fish was boated soon after--20 minutes later the two realized that maybe the 2nd fish was not a big Wahoo but in fact a large tuna--pushing the 90lb mark.  30 minutes later large fatty onboard Donald and copeche called it a day--spent an hour catching bait for tomorrow and were in and boat washed down by 11am.

Efran, Carlos, and Pablo all had great days on the water too--Three boats of wahoo and tuna also soon followed the zhao to the marina.  Fall fishing is at it's best!

Nov 15

3 boats out today!  carlos on the Reel and Hooked came in with a slamming large 55lb Wahoo--plus a smaller one an three tunas today.  Efran on the fati followed up with a nice wahoo as did Pablo on the Abigail with a nice Hoo--waters were a bit choppy as the early morning wind never settled out and by afternoon we had a good 20 knotts blowing steady.

Nov 10

Welcome to neptune tours who have been fishing with us for the last few days!  On nov 8 an assortment of tuna up to 60 lbs.  Yesterday copeche and donald had three nice fish--an 80lb broke the leader at the boat--with a 60lb pound and a 25 lb yellow fin the zhao was done fishing by 830am, cleaned the fish, packed the meat up in coolers and sent them home to fresh dinner in north carolina!  From Baja to home in 8 quick hours!  The fleet has been catching dorado, nice sized yellow fin alone with as assortment of dorado.  bait has been a bit sparse--sardines are moving up the coast and thinning out making it hard on some mornings to find bait--the daily success has still been great!

October 31

Halloween!

Two boats out.  Efran and Carlos...Efran had one nice dorado and finally found tha big tuna he's been hunting for--unfortunatelly after an hour of chasing the fish the hook pulled free.  The big ones are out there--time will tell.  Carlos took a different direction with his clients wanting to get into the Wahoo action--2 nice 40 lb fish--at the docks the happy fisherman said--"wellm we sure taught him how to fish--we caught the two we hooked and he lost the other 5"--we love a good sense of humor but 2 out of 7--hopefully Carlos won't have such luck at the Tunajackpot on the Zhao coming up in a few short days....

October 30

efran on the fati 2 was in the tuna thick today.  Seemed like there was always a fish on and being fought...he's still in search of that elusive LARGE tuna--we'll keep you posted--five tuna for his boat at the end of the day
